Five Favorites Friday #29

Happy Friday!!

I, for one, could not be more excited that it is Friday. I have a totally insane weekend planned that is going to be overwhelmingly busy, but I’m just happy to be able to get out of the office and step away from work for a little bit. The holidays always seem to bring out the crazy in people, you know?

Probably myself included sometimes!

Like when it comes to buying Christmas presents, which I still have a bunch to buy! I’M SO BEHIND!!! People are talking about having their gifts already wrapped and everything… yea, I’m not even close to that point. Can we push Christmas back another week, please?

FFFold

Even though I’m a little stressed out about all of the holiday insanity that’s about to come my way, it’s still Friday and that mean it’s time for another round of Five Favorites Friday!

Favorite New Goal: Drinking More Water

20131211_152915

So in case you haven’t figure this out about me yet, I’m a very type-A, planner, goal-oriented type of person. Which means that I LOVE setting goals for myself, and then challenging myself to meet those goals. I know it sounds super nerdy, but whatever works, right? Well this month, one of my goals was to really up my water intake, because I’m normally terrible about drinking enough water. Like I think I’ve trained my body out of giving thirst cues! I just don’t think to drink anything, ALL DAY.

But I’m trying to get better. I bought myself a few water bottles to keep at work, and I’m challenging myself to drink at least 48oz while I’m sitting at my desk during work, plus a glass with breakfast and one with dinner. Which brings me to at least 60oz a day. That is a HUGE jump for someone who was probably drinking MAYBE 16oz a day, plus 2 cups of coffee. It was bad guys.

It’s working though! And for an extra win – it makes me get up and away from my desk several times a day because I have to pee all. the. time! haha.

Favorite Themed Meal: Southern Food

This totally didn’t happen on purpose, but when I looked down at my lunch today I realized that it was totally “Southern food” themed! I had buffalo chicken mac and cheese, collard greens, and a few bites of bean stew + cornbread that a coworker brought in. So tasty, and SO filling!

Favorite New Holiday Tradition: Cookie Exchange

20131211_220541

Despite the snow on Tuesday, my church still had it’s annual cookie exchange (even if it just got moved to Wednesday), and I managed to pick up a TON of different cookies. I actually had to leave the exchange to go to rehearsal, so I didn’t get any pictures, but a sweet friend of mine managed to gather everything for me. So thank you Molly!

And it means that I have WAYYYY too many cookies sitting in my kitchen right now. So tempting…

Favorite Current Read: In Defense of Food

Since I just finished The Book Thief (SO GOOD, you should definitely check it out!), I’ve been trying to find something different to read until my next book club selection. Thanks to the recommendation of several people, I picked up In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan and I’m loving it so far! It’s basically all about the food trends and changes in the American diet that are so focused on specific nutrients or vitamins that we’ve traded in REAL food for food with “extra fiber” or “Now with Vitamin D!” We’ve become a culture that’s forgotten what it means to eat real food.

I love books like this that really challenge you to think about everything you currently know and believe about food. Plus his philosophy on eating is so basic, it’s almost brilliant: Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. Now THAT is a diet I can get behind!

If you’re in to nonfiction reads and want something that will really make you think, I highly recommend this book. I’ve also heard that his other books, especially The Omnivore’s Dilemma, are also extremely good!

Favorite (All-Time) Christmas Movie: White Christmas

For me, it’s not really Christmas until I watch this movie. We’re even going to see a live performance of it, and Chris asked me if that counted as my “White Christmas viewing” for the year. To which I told him, “of course not!” This is such a classic movie, and makes me happy every single time I watch it. I mean, what Christmas song is more recognizable than White Christmas?

If you have not seen it (shame on you!), go watch it right now. Then it’ll really feel like Christmas!

Well there you have it – 5 totally random things that I’m loving this week!

So tell me: What are you loving this week? What is your favorite Christmas movie?

Annnddd we are life twins again… I am in the middle of “In Defense of Food”!! (Admittedly, I’ve been in the middle of it for months… no matter.) It is SUCH a good, thought-provoking book. I feel like every time I read a paragraph, I tell whoever is near me about it, like “OMG, have you ever thought of this? It makes so much sense!” I am scared to read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” though – the same co-worker who gave me IDoF told me that I shouldn’t read it if I ever want to eat meat again. Yikes! Happy reading! Let’s discuss sometime when we both finish it :)

Haha, Yes! Twinsies! And I know – it is SOOO fascinating! And it all really makes a lot of sense, in a creepy “remind me again while I’m eating this?” kind of way. And I’ve heard the same thing about Omnivore’s Dilemma. I’m not sure that I’m quite ready for that yet, but I have to admit that I am really intrigued.

Have you read DIvergent? If not, you need to. SO GOOD!

My favorite Christmas movie is the Rudolph clay-mation show :) After that, I always watch Elf, Christmas Vacation, The Holiday, and Love Actually this time of year.

Yes, I LOVED it (although not so much with Allegient, I was a little underwhelmed).

I do love the original Rudolph, although that abominable snowman used to freak me out! And Elf, Love Actually and the Holiday are definitely my other 3 favorites. I’m not sure what my last top 5 would be though… maybe It’s a Wonderful Life?

My favorite Christmas movie might not be a classic, but I just love “Elf”… it cracks me up every time!

I’m not usually a huge Will Ferrell fan, but I did LOVE Elf. Gets me every time. And I even find myself thinking (or you know, yelling outloud like a weirdo) “Santa, I KNOW HIM!” every time I see someone in a Santa suit. haha

I’m with you, I definitely need to start drinking more water ( or more of anything for that matter) I just need to remember to hydrate! Cookie exchanges look like so much fun, I have never done one! I guess my favorite Christmas movie would be Home Alone. Although I am probably way too old to still be watching it!

I know, I’m so bad about hydrating! But I’m really, REALLY trying to work on it, because I know how good it is for you! And Home Alone, I totally forgot about that one!! Love it! And there is no such thing as being too old for classic Christmas movies!

I definitely loved that book, though I admit I’m laughing right now that it’s listed right after cookie exchange because that’s so me too…combining the healthy and splurge :)

I absolutely LOVE ‘White Christmas’ too! I watched it last week but I’m thinking about going to see it again this weekend at the movie theater (it’s playing at one of our ‘indie’ film centers!) :)
